Streszczenie
Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie kultu Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego na łamach czasopisma „W Służbie Penitencjarnej”. Periodyk adresowano do funkcjonariuszy straży więziennej i pracowników zakładów wychowawczych, poprawczych oraz zabezpieczających. Ukazywał się on w latach 1936-1939, a zatem po śmierci Komendanta, gdy działania upamiętniające jego osobę nabrały w Polsce wyjątkowej intensywności. Autorzy opublikowanych tekstów konsekwentnie budowali wyidealizowany obraz Marszałka, przypisując mu m.in. rolę architekta polskiej niepodległości, pomijając przy tym wkład innych postaci historycznych oraz wszelkie kontrowersje związane z jego działalnością polityczną, takie jak gwałtowne zerwanie z porządkiem konstytucyjnym, ograniczanie swobód obywatelskich czy zwalczanie opozycjonistów. Narracja artykułów wpisywała się w szerszy nurt polityki historycznej państwa polskiego w latach 30. XX wieku, ukierunkowanej na legitymizację i wzmacnianie społecznej lojalności względem obozu sanacyjnego, co z kolei odzwierciedlało ogólnoeuropejskie tendencje do konsolidacji rządów autorytarnych kosztem wartości demokratycznych.

The cult of Marshal Józef Piłsudski in the magazine "W Służbie Penitencjarnej" in the years 1936-1939
Summary
The aim of this article is to present the cult of Marshal Józef Piłsudski in the periodical „In the Service of the Penitentiary”. The Journal was addressed to prison guards as well as to employees of correctional, reform, and security institutions. It was published between 1936 and 1939, that is, after the death of the Commander, when commemorative activities devoted to him gained exceptional intensity in Poland. The authors of the published texts consistently constructed an idealized image of the Marshal, attributing to him i.a. the role of architect of Polish independence, while disregarding the contributions of other historical figures and ignoring the controversies surrounding his political activity, such as the abrupt rupture with the constitutional order, the restriction of civil liberties, and the suppression of opposition. The narrative of the articles was embedded in the broader current of the Polish state’s historical policy of the 1930s, aimed at legitimizing and reinforcing social loyalty to the Sanation camp, which in turn reflected wider European tendencies toward the consolidation of authoritarian regimes at the expense of democratic values.
