Romania’s Digital Sovereignty: Reality, Myth, or Future Goal?

In the age of artificial intelligence, countries need a national defence strategy that is aligned with existing and emerging technologies and social trends, while also laying the groundwork for a new legislative package that can adequately address the risks involved. Romanian President Nicușor Dan recently announced that the latest national defence strategy will focus primarily on regulating and protecting the digital sphere, with particular emphasis on the country’s digital sovereignty, the extension of data protection rights, and the regulation of digital infrastructure. But what does this actually mean? How can Romania achieve digital sovereignty, and what tools and legal frameworks are available to it in such an urgent matter?
